Sterility assurance level (SAL)
Sterile processing definition
Sterility assurance level is the probability that a single viable microorganism remains on an item after sterilization. For terminally sterilized medical devices the standard is an SAL of 10^-6, meaning no more than a one-in-a-million chance that a viable microorganism is present.
