Chemical indicator (CI)

Sterile processing definition

A chemical indicator is a device that changes color or form when exposed to one or more sterilization process variables, such as time, temperature or the presence of sterilant. CIs are grouped into classes by how many variables they respond to, from Class 1 process indicators (like autoclave tape) to Class 5 integrating and Class 6 emulating indicators. A CI shows that conditions were met at that spot; it does not prove sterility.

Know the indicator classes, where internal and external indicators go, and that a passed CI does not replace a biological indicator.
