Instructions for use (IFU)
Sterile processing definition
Instructions for use are the device manufacturer's written directions for cleaning, inspecting, packaging and sterilizing a specific device. They specify things like detergents, disassembly, compatible sterilization methods and cycle parameters. In sterile processing the IFU is the first reference to check whenever there is a question about how to process a device.
On the CRCST exam
When an exam question asks where to look first for how to process a device, the answer is usually the manufacturer's IFU.
