Immediate-use steam sterilization (IUSS)

Sterile processing definition

Immediate-use steam sterilization is steam sterilization of an item for urgent patient care when there is no time to process it with the normal wrapped method. It is not a routine shortcut for lack of inventory. Items still need thorough cleaning first, must follow the manufacturer's instructions and should be transported in a way that keeps them sterile. Implants should not be processed this way except in a documented emergency.

On the CRCST exam

Know that IUSS is for urgent need only, still requires full cleaning and should be documented and minimized.
