CRCST Study Guide: A 6-Week Plan to Pass the First Time

Updated

Quick answer

Study for the CRCST by domain weight: spend most of your time on cleaning and decontamination, preparation and packaging, and sterilization (63% of the exam). Use the HSPA Sterile Processing Technical Manual as your reference, practice questions every day, and take full 150-question timed mock exams before test day. Book the exam once you consistently score 70% or higher.

Before you start: take a baseline test

Take a free 15-question practice test before you open a book. Your results by domain show where to spend time. Most people are strong in whatever area they work in day to day and weak everywhere else.

The 6-week plan

This plan assumes about an hour a day. Squeeze it into 3 weeks if your test date is close, or stretch it out if you're working full time.

WeekFocusExam share
1Departmental considerations: microbiology, infection prevention, regulations, workflow and airflow15%
2Cleaning, decontamination and disinfection21%
3Preparation and packaging: instrument identification, inspection, wraps, containers21%
4Sterilization process: steam, low-temperature methods, monitoring and indicators21%
5Storage, transport and inventory; patient care equipment; professional development22%
6Two full timed mock exams, then review every missAll

Each week, read the matching chapters in the HSPA manual, then do practice questions on that topic until you're scoring above 75%.

How to use practice questions

  • Read every explanation, even when you got it right. You may have guessed.
  • Keep a list of misses and redo them two days later.
  • Practice by topic while learning, then switch to mixed, timed sets in the last two weeks.
  • Time yourself. The real exam gives you 72 seconds per question.

Topics people underestimate

  • Instrument identification. You need to know instruments by name, type and use.
  • Sterilization monitoring. Know the difference between mechanical, chemical and biological monitoring, and the classes of chemical indicators.
  • Spaulding classification and which disinfection level each device needs.
  • Event-related sterility and what makes a package no longer sterile.
  • The small domains. Storage, professional development and patient care equipment are only 22% together, but skipping them can cost you the pass.

How to know you're ready

You're ready when you score 70% or higher on two full-length timed mock exams in a row, with no domain far below the rest. HSPA doesn't publish a passing percentage, so this is our readiness target, not an official cut score. A full SPD Ready pass includes unlimited timed mock exams weighted like the real test.

FAQ

How long should I study for the CRCST?
Most people do well with 4 to 8 weeks of steady study, about an hour a day. Use a baseline practice test to decide; if you're already above 70%, you may need less.
What book should I use for the CRCST?
HSPA's Sterile Processing Technical Manual, 9th edition (2023), which replaced the Central Service Technical Manual. HSPA also references ANSI/AAMI ST79.
Are practice tests enough to pass the CRCST?
Practice tests show what you don't know, but pair them with the HSPA manual for the topics you miss. The combination works better than either alone.
