Decontamination

Sterile processing definition

Decontamination is the process of removing or inactivating contaminants so that an item is safe to handle. In a sterile processing department it is also the name of the dirty area where used instruments are received, sorted, cleaned and disinfected. The decontamination area is kept at negative air pressure so contaminated air does not flow out into clean areas.
